New motorway tolls will apply as of 1st January 2011.
These new charges comply with both the scheduled law on tariff adjustments and the provisions of the austerity package passed by the Government at the beginning of the summer.
CHANGES TO THE TOLL CHARGE
The first increase in the motorway toll charge (L.D. No. 78 of 31st May 2010), concerned the increase in the licence fee which benefits ANAS (increase of one thousandth of a euro per kilometre for toll classes A and B - i.e. cars and motorbikes - and three thousandths of a euro per kilometre for toll classes 3, 4 and 5 - i.e. for HGVs).
However, from 1st January 2011, the annual tariff increase will come into effect, which, apart from the provisions of the so-called “price cap”, as the formula for the price increase rate is known in technical jargon, also includes the adjustment, i.e. an increase in the annual rate of tax in favour of ANAS amounting to two thousandths of a euro per kilometre for toll classes A and B and six thousandths of a euro per kilometre for toll classes 3, 4 and 5.
TOLL INCREASE: the “price cap” formula
The flat tariff will be adjusted on 1st January every year according to the so-called “price cap” formula, which is defined in the contract with ANAS.
This formula is based on the inflation rate, the expected increase in productivity, the quality of the carriageway surface of every licence holder and the accident rate.
The final tariff, which will be rounded to the nearest 10 euro cents as per the statutory provisions, therefore makes it possible for the final toll increase between a toll entrance terminal and a toll exit terminal to be higher, lower or the same as the annual increase of the flat tariff. The tariff increase for the Brenner motorway determined by the formula given above is 1.39%.
NEW TARIFF: the calculation
The new flat tariff, plus the surcharge which benefits ANAS, multiplied by the number of kilometres travelled, plus VAT (20%) and - conforming to the law - rounded (up or down to the nearest 10 euro cent) determines the new toll charge.
