Fixed cameras across the motorway network

NOTICE PURSUANT TO THE ITALIAN DATA PROTECTION LAW  No. 196/2003

Processing of data collected via video recording along the route of the A22

Fixed cameras across the motorway network

Video cameras are installed along the 313.5 km length of the A22 motorway network for the purpose of monitoring the traffic situation, critical events and the weather. They are used to facilitate and speed up the work of the motorway staff responsible for observing traffic flow and resolving emergency incidents or accidents and also help with the processing, management and continuous updating of traffic information.

The video cameras are installed in such a way so as to be able to gather images of sections of the motorway and of travelling vehicles. The equipment is set up to take medium-long shots. This means that registration numbers and vehicle occupants cannot be recognised.

In emergency situations and critical phases of accident management only, the cameras may use special zoom and panning functions which could make it possible to identify vehicles and their occupants. Only authorised staff at the User Service Centre are permitted to activate these camera functions following an authentication procedure.

The pictures obtained by the video cameras are transmitted via the private glass fibre network of Brennerautobahn AG and shown in real time in the Control Centre at the User Service Centre in Trento. No recording takes place.

Responsibility for the data processing of all activities connected with these video facilities lies with the General Technical Director of Brennerautobahn AG.

Recording of images at the motorway toll stations

The toll stations of Brennerautobahn AG are equipped with a video recording system that automatically captures the registration numbers of vehicles passing the toll station for cases in which a user does not pay the toll, does not possess an entry ticket or uses the control equipment in a way that does not correspond to the ticket held. This permits the subsequent instigation of  relevant administrative and/or legal steps in the event that the prerequisites for such action are fulfilled pursuant to Article 176 of Legal Decree 285/1992.

These images may only be viewed by staff given special responsibility for data processing and are stored for the purposes of enforcing obligations arising with regard to the charging of a toll and for stipulating the procedure to be pursued in the event of unlawful actions. Third parties specifically appointed for the purpose are also used to assist with the processing of data for the purpose of recovering toll costs or damages.

Responsibility for the activities connected with these systems lies with the Commercial Director in the case of management of technical facilities and organisation of measures following non-payment and with the Head of the Legal Department in the case of managing claims for damages.

Video cameras for the automatic detection of incidents

Automatic Incident Detection (AID) cameras are connected to image processing systems in order to provide automatic recognition of incidents affecting traffic safety and to fulfil statistical functions.

They are located in some tunnels and are activated via a series of sensors when particular events such as accident, fire or a stationary vehicle occur. Recordings made are stored on protected servers and are only retained for as long as is absolutely necessary to investigate the situation. The duration of recording is limited to the minimum period required to capture the dynamics of the incident, and images remain stored for a few hours. Recordings may only be downloaded and retained for longer periods of time if this is necessary for the reconstruction of the details of the incident or required by the courts.

AID video cameras are also in operation at some service stations, where they are activated if a vehicle enters the service station on the wrong side of the road. In such cases, drivers are alerted to the danger via acoustic and visual warning signals.

The processing of such data takes place completely anonymously.

Responsibility for the processing of activities connected with these video facilities lies with  the General Technical Director.

Images of unguarded risk areas, installations rooms and technical facilities

Video surveillance cameras are installed in some unguarded critical areas belonging to Brennerautobahn AG (tunnel crossing points, installations rooms, technical facilities) in order to protect vulnerable resources against acts of vandalism and unauthorised access.

These cameras are activated via specific sensors in the event of potentially dangerous incidents in the areas they cover. Images are shown in real time in the Control Centre at the A22 User Service Centre. Recordings made are stored on protected servers and are only retained for as long as is absolutely necessary to investigate the situation.

The Plessi Museum am Brenner, which recently opened and is the first example in Italy of a museum site located on a motorway, is under video surveillance around the clock in order to protect the cultural heritage on show.

Responsibility for the processing of activities connected with these video facilities lies with the General Technical Director.

Webcam on the internet site: www.autobrennero.it

The Internet site www.autobrennero.it shows images from some webcams, enabling the traffic and weather situation in certain areas of the motorway network to be viewed in real time.

In no case do the images made available on the website enable vehicles and persons travelling along the respective sections of the motorway to be recognised, neither do any such cameras record images.

In the case of all systems listed here, images which may occasion the processing of personal data are only accessible to staff appointed to the task of processing such data. The owner of all data processing systems is Brennerautobahn AG, Registered Office via Berlino 10, Trento. Users may contact the company in writing via the e-mail address privacy@autobrennero.it in order to obtain further information or to exercise their rights pursuant to Article 7 of Legal Decree No. 196/2003
