Integrated quality, environment and safety system

The company has instigated an integrated Quality, Environment and Safety System in accordance with the Standards UNI EN ISO 9001, UNI EN ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 for the purposes of supplying services in line with the relevant requirements and statutory provisions, increasing customer satisfaction, improving environmental performance and risk control and enhancing its effectiveness in the field of health and safety at work.

The important stages within the integrated Quality, Environment and Safety System were achievement of the certifications UNI EN ISO 9001 and UNI EN ISO 14001 in 2003, the extension of these to the service areas in 2009 and 2010 and certification of the company’s own management system pursuant to the OHSAS 18001 Standard in 2011.
In 2011, the company also obtained an extension to its UNI EN ISO 9001 certification to encompass the  construction planning monitoring procedure for the purpose of validation.

Following an inspection visit by Accredia in July 2014, the Brenner Motorway officially obtained the accreditation for inspectorate Type B within the meaning of the UNI EN ISO/IEC 17020 standard in September 2014. This is a prerequisite for the inspection of publicly funded construction projects with a value exceeding 20 million euros.

In April 2015 the certifying body arrived at a positive assessment of the path of improvement being pursued by the Integrated System, confirmed the validity of the security certification and renewed both quality and environmental certifications.

Certification of the integrated Quality, Environment and Safety System adopted is used for the following purposes:

  • motorway management;
  • planning and construction management for the building and maintenance of motorway infrastructures;
  • operation and monitoring of activities performed in the service areas.

The continuous improvement of the quality level of user services is currently focused on the service areas (service management and projects for service areas maintenance or modernisation), information and safety (lorry parking, dynamic use of the hard shoulder, increasing the number of emergency lay-by’s) and emergency management.

The Company considers the environment to be a unique and irrecoverable primary resource which should be protected and enhanced. For this reason, it endeavors to reduce the environmental impact of its activities.
The objectives undertaken by the Company include the following:

  • the containment of environmental impact correlated to the activities and services managed through the promotion of railway transportation;
  • the construction of additional noise barriers;
  • the laying of DFAS (specific sound-absorbent drainage asphalt) along the entire motorway and the careful maintenance of this surface;
  • promoting the use of fuels from renewable energy sources or with low ambient impact
  • the participation in development and promotion projects of alternative technologies which respect the environment
  • improvement of resource management, promoting the use of alternative sources with low ambient impact (hydrogen, photovoltaic, teleheating, methane);
  • going on with research project in order to integrate infrastructures into the landscape and evaluate the impact of the Brenner motorway on air quality.

The Company takes the health and safety of its employees, contractors, external staff, motorway users and the population at large extremely seriously. The goals it has set itself in terms of the execution of its operational activities therefore include the following:

  • ensuring its commitment to the prevention of accidents and occupational disease and to risk management;
  • ensuring an ongoing improvement in its safety performance levels;
  • ensuring participation and consultation of employees and inclusion of external employees, contractors and suppliers;
  • applying the best available practices for the protection of health and safety at work and public security.

On the annual due date, the Company applies successfully one of its main organizational and administrative instruments in the form of a re-examination undertaken by management. This encompasses an analysis of the results of internal audits, complaints, the environmental budget, management of environmental emergencies, management of service areas as well as health and safety at work. Possible organizational and management changes and/or updating of procedures, activities and technologies are identified, and recommendations made by interested parties are taken into account. An additional aim of this instrument is the definition of improvement objectives and goals and the management of these by means of the development of implementation programs and via periodic monitoring of the results achieved.

Every year the Company carries out customer satisfaction researches aimed at estimating the quality of services provided as perceived by the motorway users.
