Hydrogen

HYDROGEN FIRST FULL TANK OF HYDROGEN IN THE BOLZANO SUD SERVICE STATION.
A22 E IIT: INAUGURATION OF THE FIRST HYDROGEN PRODUCTION, STORAGE AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM IN ITALY ON AN INDUSTRIAL SCALE.


The Brennerautobahn AG and the Istituto per Innovazioni Tecnologiche (IIT) inaugurated (05.06.2014) the first hydrogen production, storage and distribution system powered by renewable energy at the Bolzano Sud motorway service station.  The medium-term objective of the project referred to as “H2 Südtirol” is to succeed in refuelling all public buses serving the city of Bolzano. At a later stage, a substantially more exacting challenge will be represented by the supplying to public vehicles.  

Hydrogen derives from renewable sources through electrolysis and is subsequently purified, compressed and provisionally stored in pressure tanks. The latter will enable the use of hydrogen for supplying vehicles.  The Centre is made up of three glass covered buildings of similar appearance endowed with entirely separate functions: the first houses the equipment for electrolytic hydrogen production, the second houses the areas reserved for storage and for the hydrogen tanks, the third hosts the organisational and educational activities. Hydrogen as used to supply vehicles is used both as pure hydrogen as well as blended with methane. 

Under nominal conditions, the system is able to produce 180 Nm³/h, enabling the supplying of approximately twenty buses, or up to 800 fuel cell vehicles (with an average daily distance equal to about 40 km). 1 Nm³ of hydrogen can replace around 0.35 litres of petrol or 0.3 litres of diesel fuel. The hydrogen production system is able to replace about 525,000 litres of petrol or 440,000 litres of diesel fuel per year.

Using this H2 it is possible to save up to approximately 1,200.000 kg of harmful CO2 emissions per year.  The long-term objective of the The Brenner Autobahn is to create a distribution network able to serve the entire arterial route with reference points placed at a distance not exceeding 100 km, so as to accomplish the so-called "Green Corridor": a Munich-Modena motorway section entirely equipped for hydrogen refuelling purposes, with evident benefits for the whole alpine ecosystem.

The newly launched system , the first in Italy on an industrial scale has also been devised as a "demonstrative" system, namely open to the public via guided tours: "hands-on technology". In fact, it features training rooms and a conference hall. The aim is to enhance the possibility of new activities in the industrial sector and the development of a broad know-how in relation to hydrogen.
