Plessi Museum
Plessi Museum
Opening hours 6:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m.
At the Brenner Pass, in the buildings once occupied by the Customs Offices on the border between Italy and Austria, today there is the first example of a museum on a motorway. The architectural complex, covering a surface area of 13,000 square metres, was inaugurated in 2013 by Autostrada del Brennero SpA and is a formal and functional experiment for transforming a traditional rest area into a location dedicated to culture.
The museum displays videos, drawings and installations by Fabrizio Plessi, one of the leading figures of international contemporary art who, in addition to creating the works exhibited, has also designed the structure’s interior settings.
In the large main hall, conceived to be a transparent exhibition room opened onto the outer landscape, stands the large sculpture called “L’anima della natura” (The Soul of Nature) created by Plessi on the occasion of the Expo 2000 of Hannover and intended to be exhibited at the stand of ‘Euregio’ - European Region - the common cross-border collaboration project between Tyrol, South Tyrol and Trentino. The sculpture consists of three triangles, representing the three lands of the Euregion, and a series of screens that simulate its immersion into water. Water is indeed the dominating element of the work of art, depicted in its three states to represent the three regions: the glaciers of Tyrol, the streams of South Tyrol and the lakes of Trentino.
This cultural initiative is part of a series of projects and actions that Autobrennero is implementing in order to make motorway travelling an occasion for living significant experiences in contact with the culture of the lands the motorway crosses through.
