BrennerLEC
Project aimed at creating a low emission corridor along the A22 motorway section in Trentino - South Tyrol through dynamic traffic management systems.









2016-2021

In addition to Autostrada del Brennero as coordinator, the project also involves the Environmental Protection Agencies of the Provinces of Trento and Bolzano, the University of Trento, NOI TechPark Südtirol / Alto Adige and CISMA srl.

The objective of the project is the creation of a low-emission corridor along the A22 motorway in Trentino Alto Adige by experimentally implementing dynamic traffic management systems to protect air quality and climate and to protect some pilot areas from noise. In particular, the innovative aspect of the project is to demonstrate that anticipating intervention measures on the basis of complex and accurate forecasts brings benefits on both the environmental and traffic fronts.

In particular, it is a demonstrative and innovative project that aims to define how, where and when speed restrictions and other traffic regulation measures can be applied with the aim of achieving maximum environmental and transport efficiency with the least possible inconvenience to road users.

The three pillars of the project are:
1. dynamic speed management,
2. the dynamic lane,
3. 'intelligent' signalling.

LIFE alps
Project aimed at catalyzing the development of a zero-emission road transport system in South Tyrol, along the Brenner corridor and in the neighbouring regions.

 

2019-2026


The "Strategic Plan for the Activation of Sustainable Mobility in South Tyrol" includes zero-emission, ongoing and planned transport projects and services, including those specified in the LIFE alps project (2019-2026), promoted within the LIFE Integrated Projects 2017 call of the European Commission.

The aim of the LIFE project is to catalyze the development of a zero-emission road transport system in South Tyrol, along the Brenner corridor (the main European traffic axis) and in the neighboring regions.

The introduction of zero emission vehicles in public and private sector services will contribute to a significant reduction in pollution in the Alpine area and define a path to complete decarbonisation of the local transport system by exploiting local renewable fuels (hydrogen and electricity), using hydropower and other renewable resources available in the area.

By establishing "Model Municipalities", with diversified zero-emission services, South Tyrol will be an example, demonstrating how a combination of early use of zero emission vehicles by public agencies and private companies, together with smart regional policies, is able to stimulate the widespread adoption of zero-emission services at regional level.

An important part of LIFE alps also concerns the identification of numerous actions being complementary to the main project activities: from the installation of electric and hydrogen charging equipment, to the deployment of vehicles financed by a series of public and private, regional and European bodies.

The complementary activities include the use of renewable sources for the production of green energy to be supplied at refueling and recharging stations in service in Bolzano, Merano (BZ), in various municipalities of the Venosta Valley, in Brunico and in Affi.

Within the LIFE alps project Autostrada del Brennero SpA will concretely have two main tasks:

-     creating a hydrogen distributor in Affi (VR);

-     as a complementary activity, albeit not co-financed by the project, installing at least 5 electric recharging points along the motorway axis.

The activity implemented by the Company within the project will contribute to extend the supply of zero-emission services outside South Tyrol, thus contributing to provide an infrastructure, complementary to the South Tyrol one, capable of guaranteeing a charging network that encourages the adoption of zero-emission vehicles, both private and public, in several European regions.

C-ROADS ITALY
Project aimed at the implementation of C-ITS systems in real traffic conditions.




2017-2020


In many respects today's vehicles are already connected devices. However, in the near future they will also interact directly with each other and with the road infrastructure. This interaction is the subject of cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS), which will enable road users and traffic managers to share and use previously unavailable information and coordinate their actions. This cooperative element should considerably improve road safety, traffic efficiency and driving comfort, helping the driver to take the right decisions and to adapt to the traffic situation.

C-Roads cooperation is considered to be an appropriate tool for Member States to continue their involvement in the dynamic field of C-ITS.

Member States throughout Europe will set up the C-ITS pilot sites needed for the testing and subsequent operation of "Day-1" use cases, recommended by the  C-ITS Commission of the European Commission, by investing in their infrastructure. The car manufacturers and industry will use this pilot infrastructure to test components and services.

It is the task of numerous C-Roads working groups, working closely with the Amsterdam Group, with the InterCor project as well as with the EU-C-ITS and ITS platforms of the EU, to elaborate technical specifications and agreements for the implementation of harmonized and interoperable infrastructures.

Based on these specifications and agreements, the technical and organizational aspects will be tested in several pilot sites across Europe, where various organizational frameworks, technical approaches, operating environments and fleets of vehicles will test and evaluate the performance and feasibility of harmonized C-ITS systems and services.

Although the services and systems implemented will differ in the C-Roads pilot sites, all installations will be performed in a harmonized way, ensuring in particular the above interoperable services of end-users based on international cooperation.

To ensure interoperability, cross-site tests will be organized by the C-Roads Platform and run by the C-Roads consortium. All participating pilot sites will need to provide roadside and onboard test infrastructures.

C-ROADS ITALY expects to test a series of C-ITS "Day1" services, mainly along the A22, but also along the motorway sections of CAV and Autovie Venete, as recommended by the C-ITS Platform.

Within the project, two specific applications (Highway Chauffeur and Truck Platooning) will be tested, respectively by CRF and IVECO.

This involves adapting the infrastructure and integrating C-ITS V2I services and V2V information with vehicle control strategies.

C-Roads Italy 3
Project co-financed by the European Commission under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) 2014-2020 programme.

The Beneficiary and Coordinator of the project is the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT).

The main objectives of the project are to improve road safety and traffic management efficiency, to achieve continuity of C-ITS services by extending the geographical coverage of the national road network along the Core Road network of the European Scan-Med and Mediterranean Corridors, and finally to implement C-ITS "Day1" and "Day 1.5" services as recommended by the C-ITS Platform of the European Commission.

As a further development of what has already been implemented in C-Roads Italy, the action objectives include the consideration of other scenarios within already developed use cases or the analysis of new use cases.

The Company is entrusted with the organisational and technical aspects of C-ITS, in order to ensure a continuous harmonisation of all services tested in the different C-Roads pilot sites in Europe and to contribute to the technical standardisation of services, by participating in the different European working groups and task forces.

The Company is also called upon to extend the geographical network of coverage of C-ITS services along its motorway stretch, by strengthening its Road Side Units (RSU), improving the implementation of C-ITS activities along the entire A22 section, in particular by adding additional antennas.

URSA MAJOR neo
Project aimed at developing ITS services to improve traffic management.








2017-2020

The URSA MAJOR Neo (UMneo) project continues the development of ITS services to improve freight traffic on the TEN-T road network along the CEF RHINE-ALPS and SCANMED core corridors, linking the North Sea ports, the Rhine region and the Ruhr, the metropolitan areas of southern Germany and northern Italy with the Mediterranean ports up to Sicily. Project partners at European level come from Germany, Italy and the Netherlands.

The improvement of international freight traffic services along these corridors is the main European added value of UMneo.

UMneo is based on the results of EU-co-financed projects: Ursa Major and Ursa Major 2. It extends the scope of the project geographically by expanding the network to completely cover the southern part of the SCANMED corridor and conceptually address the intermodal aspect of transport. Therefore, the UMneo partners group (implementing bodies) have been expanded to include urban nodes, and in particular port operators and railway hub operators.

Autostrada del Brennero SpA will implement four specific activities within the project:

-     development of an app to inform heavy goods vehicles drivers on the availability of free stalls. Specifically, as far as A22 is concerned, the app will show the number of free stalls at the Brennero, Sadobre, Rovereto South and Campogalliano West parking areas;

-     installation of new charging points for the refrigeration units of heavy goods vehicles at the HGV parking lot in Rovereto South. The activity foresees in particular the installation of 5 charging points;

-     installation of new variable message signs at 6 motorway entries. The activity envisages that VMSs (including supports and interfacing to the TCC) are installed at the motorway tolling gates of Bolzano South (2 VMS), Verona North, Mantova South, Reggiolo Rolo and Carpi;

-     arrangement of a new disaster recovery system and of a new video server for the Traffic Control Centre (C.A.U.). The activity foresees in particular the creation of a small operational center at the Motorway Safety Center in San Michele all'Adige, with full functionality for traffic management and minimum functionality for information management. This backup system will be handled by two operators and will be used in case emergencies should impede the A22 TCC. As part of this activity, it will be necessary to develop an appropriate software, purchase the needed hardware and a videowall with LCD monitors. Furthermore, at the current TCC a new video server will be installed to collect images from the peripheral equipment and make them accessible in several formats to multiple devices (tablets, smartphones, NVRs and so on).

ICT4CART
Project aimed at the implementation of an ICT infrastructure towards the automation of the road transport.










2018-2021

The project ICT4CART, co-financed by the European Commission within the framework of the Horizon2020 programme, is providing an ICT infrastructure to enable the transition towards road transport automation.

To meet this high level objective ICT4CART is bringing together, adapting and improving technological advances from different industries, mainly telecom, automotive and IT. It adopts a hybrid communication approach where all the major wireless technologies, i.e. cellular, ITS G5 and LTE-V, are integrated under a flexible “sliced” network architecture.

This architecture will ensure performance and resilience for different groups of applications according to the needs of higher levels of automation (L3 & L4). On top of that, a distributed IT environment for data aggregation and analytics will be implemented.

This offers seamless integration and exchange of data and services between all the different actors, allowing 3rd parties to develop, deliver and provide innovative services, thus creating new business opportunities. Cyber-security and data privacy aspects will be duly considered throughout the whole ICT infrastructure. In addition, novel accurate localisation services, exploiting the cellular network and information from other sources, such as on-board sensors, especially in complex areas (e.g. urban), will be addressed.

Standardization and interoperability are of high interest within ICT4CART in order to ensure the impact of the project towards enabling the transition to higher levels of automation. In this context issues related to the frequency spectrum will be investigated, while through the organisation of relevant workshops the engagement of policy makers and public authorities is ensured.

To achieve its objectives ICT4CART, instead of working in generic solutions with questionable impact, it builds on four specific high-value use cases (urban and highway) which will be demonstrated and validated under real-life conditions at the test sites in Austria, Germany, Italy and across the Italian- Austria border.

The four selected use cases are:

a) parking & IoT services,
b) in-vehicle enhanced HD maps,
c) intersection crossing & lane merging
d) cross-border interoperability.

5G-CARMEN
Project aimed at assessing the potential of 5G for connected and automated driving.











2018-2021


The 5G-CARMEN project (5G for Connected and Automated Road Mobility in the European uNion), co-funded by the European Commission under the Horizon2020 Program, addresses the challenges of cooperative, connected and automated mobility by exploiting the concept of "mobility corridors". In 5G-CARMEN important European industries, academics and innovative SMEs are committed to achieve a global impact by conducting in-depth studies on an important corridor (for passengers and freight traffic volumes), from Bologna to Monaco (600 km), connecting three European regions (Bavaria, Tyrol and Trentino South Tyrol) in three countries. Negotiation of vehicle maneuvering (at various levels of automation), infotainment and emissions control in sensitive areas are the cross-border use cases targeted by the 5G-CARMEN pilot projects in order to maximize the commercial, social and environmental impact of the project.

The project will build a 5G enabled corridor to perform cross-border experiments and will implement a mix of 5G micro and macro cells for ubiquitous C-V2X connectivity. The 5G New Radio standard will be used to support services and applications with latency and / or bandwidth problems. The project will leverage a distributed mobile edge cloud that extends from the vehicle itself to the centralized cloud. The concepts of multi-tenancy and neutral hosts will be exploited in order to provide a final platform capable of enabling new business models. 5G-CARMEN will integrate C-V2X with LTE and C-ITS technologies, aiming at interoperability and exploiting a hybrid network.

Within the framework of the project Autostrada del Brennero SpA will make its infrastructure available to allow the implementation of the use cases developed in collaboration with the project partners.
