A motorway is intended not only to supply its users with mobility but also with a series of services that are key to stress-free and safe travel. One of these services consists in the supply of rest areas, in other words the construction of automobile and truck parking lots suited for various kinds of vehicles and capable of meeting the varied requirements of automobile and truck drivers. For many years now Autostrada del Brennero has been striving to reorganize and upgrade this service based on a ‘parking plan’ that envisages the identification of new rest areas as well as the improvement of the service areas and of the yards external to the motorway stations. Another increasingly important commitment is that of meeting the needs of truck drivers who, among other things, have the legal obligation of taking resting time. Indeed, despite the bans, trucks park on the acceleration and deceleration lanes of the service areas or laybys, that are intended for emergency stopping only, thereby creating safety hazards. The specific rest areas for heavy vehicles are also intended for handling specific emergencies, such as accidents, extremely bad weather conditions or days in which driving bans are in force in Italy or abroad, for example. In designing the areas dedicated to HGV resting, of adequate size and in sufficient numbers to meet their specific needs, Autostrada del Brennero foresees not only the services for the vehicles (fuelling, workshop, special services for dangerous goods) but also for the drivers (washrooms, showers, cafeterias and resting quarters), as well as information and assistance services.
