Types of lanes and payment methods

ENTERING THE MOTORWAY

The entry lanes are "bi-modal": they allow for both ticket withdrawal and Telepass transit.
The toll ticket is issued at every access ramp by an automatic machine. In order to avoid damage or loss, it is advisable to store the ticket in a safe place during one' s trip and not to fold it or expose it to magnetic sources.
Entry via Telepass is automatically recorded: there is no need to stop to pick up the ticket. The user is obliged to pass through respecting the speed limits provided: 15 km/h for trucks and 30 km/h for cars.

EXITING THE MOTORWAY

Autostrada del Brennero offers users a wide choice of payment systems to be used for the various types of tollgate listed below.

Manual tollgate
The tollbooth is manned, so that customers can pay in cash (coins and banknotes in Euros and non-EMU currency) or with the following cards: Viacard, Fast Pay (ATM cards enabled for the so-called "FastPay" circuit, which can be used in the same way as VIAcards), and cards belonging to the circuits American Express, Diners, Visa/Carta Sì, Eurocard, Mastercard, Electron via the Telepass device.
Tollgate with automatic cashpoint and Telepass lane
An unmanned tollgate which allows the same payment options as the manual tollgate. It can also be used by vehicles equipped with a Telepass device.
Dedicated Telepass lane
These are exclusively dedicated to users whose vehicle is equipped with a Telepass device. Transit details are automatically coded by the device; Telepass users can log in and register free of charge on the website www.telepass.com and obtain information on transits and new offers relating to the product/service.
Telepass lane with automatic cashpoint
These are "bi-modal" lanes that can be used both by users of Telepass devices and by users who wish to make an automatic payment using Viacard, Fast Pay or credit cards accepted by a specific card reader. A technologically advanced Remote Lane Monitoring System (MRP) assists users in case of difficulties, by providing multimedia communication (audio channel and video signal) to a geographically remote qualified operator, who monitors the MRP lanes and the respective transits.
EETS-equipped lane
Over the course of 2018, some lanes will be set up for the acceptance of the European Electronic Toll Service equipment, compliant with Directive
2004/52/EC. In these lanes, devices of the national service Telepass can still be used.

Lane assistance

For safety reasons, and regardless of the kind of problem, it  is strictly forbidden to alight from the vehicle and cross the  lanes on foot. Remote Lane Monitoring - MRP - is in operation in the toll  lanes: in case of difficulty, by pressing a button it is possible to contact an operator who can intervene and promptly solve the problem.

PAYMENT METHODS

Cash

The toll fare may be paid in cash, Euro bank notes or coins. Payment may also be made, only in bank notes, in the following foreign or non- EMU currencies:U.S. Dollar, English Sterling, Danish Krona, Canadian Dollar, Japanese Yen, Swiss Franc, Norwegian Krona, Swedish Krona and Australian Dollar. Bank cheques issued by banking institutions operating within the Italian territory made out for the exact sum of the toll fare will also be accepted as payment.

Prepaid (credit top up) Viacard

This is a prepaid, magnetized card (8.5 x 5.5 cm) which is available in 25, 50 or 75 Euro and is valid until the credit is used up. It can be purchased at our Service Centres, Punti Blu, the service stations,  ACI (Italian Automobile Institute) offices, many banks, post offices, at many newsagents as well as other retailer outlets. It can be used on the entire Italian motorway network.

Payment is effected by inserting the card, after having previously inserted the ticket, in the lane ticket payement machines labelled with the Viacard logo.

When the ticket is inserted, the toll fare will appear on the display. After inserting the card, both the amount withdrawn for the fare and the remaining credit will be visualized on the display. If credit is insufficient for payment, the difference can be made up by using a second card (a total of two cards may be used), or as an alternative cash can be used in the multi-functional lanes. No other means of payment other than as just described may be used to make up the sum (Viacard account, bank cards or tele-toll). This card may be used to make consecutive payments in the same lane.

These cards have two magnetic strips; do not expose them to magnetic fields or the data may be irretrievably lost. Should this occur, please contact the Service Centre. The Service Centres can provide an invoice for the purchase of this card.

Viacard current account

This is a laminated, magnetic card (8.5 x 5.5 cm) which defers payment of toll fares from a bank current account. There is no expiry date and no spending limit. It was created for those who have a business activity and who be invoiced for the toll fare costs.  It is issued, on presentation of relevant documentation, by our Service Centres and by banks. It can be issued as part of existing services packages provided credit institutions such as Carta Si, Diners Club, Bankamericard, Deutsche Bank, Targa, Unicard, Key Client, and Top Card.  If this account is opened directly with the Brenner Motorway Viacard Plus account, a deposit of E150 must be paid up as a deposit which serves to open the account and the issuing of the first card.

For each additional card, the deposit amount increases by E150 or, as an alternative you may provide a bank guarantee whose value is equal to sum obtained by multiplying the number of cards issued, including the first, by E150.  An annual fee of E15,49 plus E3,10 for each additional card is charged. A deposit is not required by the participating businesses. Viacard can be used on the entire Italian motorway network. Payment is effected by inserting the card, after having inserted the toll ticket, in the machines labelled with the Viacard symbol. It can also be used in the “cash only” toll booth lanes by just handing the ticket and the card to the toll booth operator. The regular Viacard has no toll fare limit, but, the payment with this card is non-transferable for any another following vehicle.

Automated paypoints

SELF-SERVICE LANES WITH AUTOMATED PAYPOINTS

In January 2010 the Brenner Motorway introduced a kind of self-service system in order to make it easier for motorway users to pay the toll.
On some tollbooths of the A22 there are now automated paypoints which allow users to pay the toll in an efficient and transparent way either in cash (notes of between 5 and 100 euros and all coins of 5 cent upwards are accepted), or with activated cards (Prepaid Viacard, current account Viacard, ATM card and credit card) via a device into which cash and cards may be inserted.
The automated paypoint is furnished with an interface which provides displays in Italian, German, English and French.
Before the transaction the user can simply key in the language which he wishes to use.

In the event of problems…
The automated paypoints have proven to be highly efficient in terms of operation. Nonetheless there may be special or rare instances on which some problem may occur. To assist customers in such cases, all automated paypoints are fitted with a telematic communication system which provides the user with assistance within the shortest possible space of time from a toll operator working on another lane of the same tollbooth. Problems which may occasionally arise include: The card does not work because of a momentary reading failure (card is not accepted or the scanner is defective), partially or completely insufficient change, payment method (bank note or card) is stuck in the scanner, or a user has failed to remove change.
The Brenner Motorway foresees suitable procedures for all situations to ensure that the transaction can be properly completed, and suitably completed forms are available for this purpose.

The administrative procedure in particular foresees that in the case of (partial or complete) failure to return change, a “credit note” will be issued, confirming that the holder has a credit which may be redeemed at one of the activated service centres on the A22 (Bressanone, Bolzano Sud, Trento Nord, Affi, Mantova Nord, Carpi).
