Projects from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR)

The Autobrennero motorway, in view of the advanced planning already developed in this sector, was awarded 15 million in 2023 for the construction of four green hydrogen plants, out of a total of 64 million planned for all sites.

The four H2 centres, which will see the light of day by 2026, will be built at the Sadobre Truck Park in Sterzing, at the Paganella East and West service areas and at the Verona North Motorway Safety Centre (CSA). Initially they will be distribution-only plants and will be fuelled with hydrogen from Bolzano South. Once the demand for hydrogen gas exceeds 1,000 kg/day, a production plant will also be built in Vipiteno and Verona North. As the number of hydrogen vehicles in circulation increases, the plan will gradually be implemented with the other production and distribution plants in Sadobre, Nogaredo, Verona and Campogalliano.

The hydrogen plants will be supplied with hydrogen by means of replaceable tube trailers, containing a hydrogen quantity of about 1,000 kg at 380 bar. The dispensing and technological areas for hydrogen compression, metering and storage will be protected by a large canopy. To date, the company has drawn up the final design of the four sites and is in the process of obtaining the necessary administrative authorisations for their construction.

Project specifications from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR)

- Plant at the Sadobre truck park (Sterzing)
The first distribution plant will be built at the Sadobre Truck Park in the municipality of Campo di Trens, in Vipiteno (BZ), adjacent to the existing fuel and natural gas (CNG and LNG) distribution plant. Initially, in line with the objectives of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), only the distribution plant will be built, which should allow an average daily hydrogen refuelling of 2,000 kg.
Equipment included in the plant:
  1. two boxes for tube trailers;
  2. storage units (medium and high pressure tanks) capable of storing 2,000 kg of hydrogen;
  3. compressors;
  4. metering and control units;
  5. cooling units;
  6. four dispensing units for refuelling light (700 bar) and heavy (350 bar) vehicles.
The supply of hydrogen to the plant is provided by means of replaceable tube trailers. Subsequently, the plant will be supplied by a pipeline from the future hydrogen production area planned at a distance of about 700 m.

Plants at the Paganella East and West service areas
The second and third hydrogen distribution plants will be located at the Paganella East and Paganella West service areas in the municipality of Lavis (TN). Both plants, for safety reasons, will be located opposite the traditional petroleum product distribution plants.
Equipment included in the plants:
  1. one box for tube trailers;
  2. storage units (medium and high pressure tanks) capable of storing 2,130 kg of hydrogen (Paganella East) and 2,400 kg (Paganella West);
  3. compressors;
  4. metering and control units;
  5. cooling units;
  6. four dispensing units for refuelling light (700 bar) and heavy (350 bar) vehicles.

Hydrogen distribution system at the Verona North Motorway Safety Centre

The fourth hydrogen distribution plant will be built in the municipality of Verona at the Verona North motorway station along a private access road to the Brenner Motorway Safety Centre. Initially, in line with the objectives of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), only the distribution plant will be built, which should allow an average daily hydrogen refuelling of 3,500 kg.
Equipment included in the plant:
  1. two boxes for tube trailers;
  2. storage units (medium and high pressure tanks) capable of storing 3,500 kg of hydrogen;
  3. compressors;
  4. metering and control units;
  5. cooling units;
  6. three dispensing units for refuelling light (700 bar) and heavy (350 bar) vehicles.
The call for tenders for the contract for the executive design and construction of the hydrogen refuelling station in Verona Nord was published on 13 September 2024 and the deadline for submitting bids is 23 October 2024.
