Road-rail intermodality
Road-rail intermodality
On 15 October 2001, the first cargo train of the railway companies that are now part of the Autobrennero Group left the Munich Riem station heading towards Verona. This was the first tangible step of an investment, the railway investment, that Autostrada del Brennero had been making since the 1990s. The company's directors had in fact already understood that the route would reach saturation in the following years. They also understood that it was now necessary to shift long-distance freight traffic to the railways.

Autobrennero is the second international freight operator
and mobilises almost 20,000 trains per year, thus helping to shift 1,000 trucks per day from motorway to rail. With an extremely positive impact on the environment: some 200,000 tonnes of CO
2
are thus prevented from entering the atmosphere each year. A commitment that will only grow in the future, for more than one reason.
Firstly, there are the major investments planned by the company in the area. With a view to transforming the A22 into Europe's first
Green Corridor
, Autobrennero is betting on intermodality, i.e. the integration of various transport systems: the Trento freight terminal will be upgraded and a new intermodal hub will be created at Isola della Scala, in synergy with Quadrante Europa. In other words, a place where trucks can switch freight to rail. And Isola della Scala's position is truly strategic, at the crossroads of economic and commercial exchange between northern and southern Europe and between East and West. But after land and rail, Autobrennero is also focusing on water, with the development of the Valdaro port that connects Mantua to the sea through 136 kilometres of navigable canals. Markets and production facilities will thus be connected from the Alps to the Adriatic.
Finally, the opening of the Brenner Base Tunnel in 2032 will allow the development of high-speed rail also in the freight sector. The capacity of the network will increase by about 60-90 trains per day and it is estimated that loads will be 20% heavier, since the limits imposed today by the slopes will be lowered.
