History
Our ideas and values
The Brennero motorway’s 314 km connect Brennero and Modena. Today, it’s an integral part of the history and identity of the locations it crosses and is used by millions every year.
Few remember when this route was only served by the Brennero and the Abetone State Road 12 and all its limitations or imagine what would have become of Italy’s economic, social, and cultural development without the A22 and its link to Northern Europe. Knowing one’s history is essential to appreciate what we have today. For the A22, we have to retrace our steps to the end of World War II. That’s when Trentino and South Tyrol and the local bodies of the other surrounding regions implemented a project crucial to the country’s development. They defended the project with determination despite the Italian Government’s paltry support, and invested their energy, money, and technology to realise it despite its challenges.
The construction
The first step was to incorporate Autostrada del Brennero Spa on
20 February 1959.
In May 1964, the first construction sites started working and on 21 December 1968 the motorway’s first 50 km became operational between Bolzano and Trento. Construction finished on
11 April 1974:
the Chiusa-Bolzano Sud became operational, and vehicles travelled along the entire motorway without interruptions from Brennero to Modena. The following years focused on strengthening the business. The first profit was achieved in 1984.
Modernisation
Since 1984, local bodies have been shareholders of Autostrada del Brennero SpA and have followed in their predecessors’ footsteps to guarantee quality management of the motorway. The 1988-2005 financial plan aimed to improve the infrastructure of some service stations as well as building links between the A22 and regular roads. In 1987 the new Brennero-Vipiteno link was inaugurated; in 1988, the new Trento Nord tollgate was inaugurated.
Over the course of the years, road safety and user comfort led to infrastructure upgrades, especially the renewal and boosting of the technology used on the route.
Today, the A22 is the pride and joy of the areas it crosses, boasting a wealth of successes in terms of safety, local involvement, sustainable mobility and further strengthening of the Italian motorway system.
