Structure monitoring and maintenance
Structure monitoring and maintenance
Due to the many architectural structures present on the Brenner Motorway (142 bridges and viaducts, 146 flyovers, 30 one-way tunnels), it is necessary to continuously conceive, design and carry out maintenance operations to make sure the motorway remains structurally sound. This is because these structures are constantly subjected to damage caused by many and concomitant physical/mechanical, chemical, natural and/or man-generated factors.
The maintenance of the structures is based mainly on the planning of periodic inspections, on the assessment of their state of preservation and on the analysis of degradation using various investigation techniques (visual inspections, experimental testing, non-destructive and destructive tests).
Continuous structural monitoring – on the A22, applied for example to the Colle Isarco viaduct (fitted with various sensors for the permanent monitoring of electromechanical and mechanical parameters, corrosion potentials, concentration of free chlorides, temperature and humidity, deformations, flexural behaviour of the structure etc.) – is one of the most modern and effective techniques for assessing the behaviour of the structures and the correct evaluation of all of their typical functional parameters.
These elements are carefully stored and handled in A22 using special software and become the basis for the definition of the intervention priority schedules as well as for the correct planning and design of the interventions themselves.
Constant monitoring and accurate analysis of the road surface are also carried out, so as to be able to plan for its maintenance as required.
