Projects and Expansion

Third lane

The construction of the third lane on the A22 is a response to the constant increase in traffic flows along the Brenner corridor and has been designed as part of an integrated approach to enhancing rail transport and intermodal transport.

The project will cover the section between Verona and the junction with the A1, spanning approximately 90 kilometres, where the current infrastructure layout allows for the construction of a new lane in each direction with minimal use of new land. On the section between Bolzano and Verona, instead, capacity will be increased through the use of a third dynamic lane that implies the temporary use of the hard shoulder during periods of heavy traffic.

The project has been designed to improve functionality, service levels and safety, particularly during periods of heavy traffic associated with weekends and public holidays, when prolonged delays and congestion occur.

Particular attention is also being paid to environmental sustainability. The works include new noise barriers, rainwater collection and treatment systems, technological upgrades and environmental mitigation measures along the entire route concerned.

The plan also includes the refurbishment and upgrading of numerous infrastructure elements, including overpasses, underpasses, junctions, hard shoulders, acceleration and deceleration lanes, and safety features, in accordance with the latest construction and technological standards.

The project is divided into three main lots and forms part of the project financing proposal approved by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in 2022, which now forms the basis of the tender for the new A22 motorway concession.
