Green corridor

For Autostrada del Brennero, sustainability is not an isolated objective but a guiding principle that shapes all projects carried out and planned along the 314 km motorway route. It is a structural approach, fully integrated into the company’s strategic vision. Right from its design and construction, the A22 has adopted advanced engineering solutions designed to blend harmoniously into the various environments it passes through, from the narrow Alpine valleys to the plains. The protection of ecosystems and the landscape, together with the search for a balance between infrastructure and the local area, has always been a priority. Although infrastructure is not directly responsible for generating emissions, the transport system plays a decisive role in the journey towards the decarbonisation of mobility. For this reason, Autostrada del Brennero regards sustainability as a cross-cutting dimension, capable of guiding its decisions and of contributing concretely to the development of increasingly efficient, responsible and environmentally friendly mobility.

The Green Corridor project forms part of this approach and reinforces it, evolving the concept of a transport corridor into an integrated system in which motorways and railways operate in synergy, with further connections to waterway transport, also through the development of the port of Mantua–Valdaro and the relevant interports.

The aim is to transform the A22 into Europe’s first transport corridor with significantly reduced emissions.

One of the key drivers for achieving this is the development of intermodality. The idea is simple yet ambitious: to integrate motorway, rail and waterway transport into a single intelligent system. The motorway is becoming increasingly technologically advanced and ready to accommodate electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles, the rail network is being upgraded to shift more freight from road to rail, while waterway transport is being enhanced, for example through the development of the Mantua–Valdaro river port.

A second key area of focus for the project is ecological transition based on concrete actions:

  • the development of clean energy infrastructure (green hydrogen and electric charging points);

  • construction of the third dynamic lane without further land occupation;

  • sustainable redevelopment of service areas;

  • reduction of noise pollution through innovative sound-absorbing barriers.

Another key pillar is technological innovation. Thanks to C-ITS (Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems), the motorway becomes digital and ‘connected’, whereby vehicles and infrastructure communicate with each other in real time. This enables traffic to be managed more efficiently, reducing queues and lowering emissions. The Green Corridor represents a concrete model of how modern infrastructure, technology and a sustainable vision can work together to reduce environmental impact and improve the quality of tomorrow’s mobility.
