Payment methods
There are 24 tollgates on the A22. The toll is calculated based on the entry and exit toll booth.
JOINING THE MOTORWAY
At the motorway entrance toll booth, motorway users can either take a ticket from the machine at each entry lane or use the subscription-based electronic toll collection system without needing to stop. In this case, the motorway users must approach the toll gate at the required speed, which is 15 km/h for HGVs and 30 km/h for light vehicles.
LEAVING THE MOTORWAY
(Staffed) toll payment booths
Payment in cash (euro coins and banknotes, as well as non-EMU currencies), with the following cards: Viacard, Fast Pay (cash cards running on the “fast-pay” network, which work like Viacard) and other cards running on the American Express, Visa/Carta Sì, Eurocard, Mastercard, Electron networks or via the electronic toll collection systems.
Unstaffed and electronic payment booths
At unstaffed or electronic payment booths payments are accepted in cash, by way of authorised payment cards or a toll tag.
Electronic toll collection
Some lanes are exclusively dedicated to electronic toll collection by way of a toll tag fitted on the vehicle.
Electronic and automatic toll collection (cards only)
Payments are accepted by way of a toll tag or authorised payment cards.
EETS/ITS-HGV lanes
Payment by way of the wireless European Electronic Toll Service and the Interoperable Toll System for HGVs, conforming to Directive 2004/52/EC. The standard Italian electronic toll collection system “Telepass” is also accepted. Currently, EETS/ITS-HGV tags distributed by DKV Euro Service, Axxés, UnipolTech and Tolltickets operate on the interconnected network.
In 2025, the events that led to the closure of one lane for more than 24 hours amounted to a total of 49.
For safety reasons it is severely forbidden to leave a vehicle and cross the lanes on foot. Motorway users are advised to use the Remote Lane Monitoring (MRP) system to contact an operator for audio/video assistance in resolving the problem.
Payment methods
The toll can be paid in cash, using Euro coins and banknotes. All denominations of banknotes and coins are accepted in the manual lanes manned by an operator; it is also possible to pay with banknotes of the following foreign currencies: US Dollar, Canadian Dollar, Australian Dollar, British Pound Sterling, Danish Krone, Norwegian Krone, Swedish Krona, Japanese Yen and Swiss Franc.
At lanes equipped with automatic cash machines, only euro coins and banknotes are accepted, with the exception of €500, €200, 2 cents, and 1 cent.
The electronic toll system allows automatic payment of motorway tolls without having to stop the vehicle at the toll booth. A transceiver device installed inside the vehicle communicates in real time with the antennas on the enabled lanes, allowing for transit detection and toll collection in fully automatic mode.
The device can be requested from authorised Service Providers via their websites or at affiliated stores. Each Service Provider offers different contract and activation modes depending on the customer profile and vehicle type. For all access modes, transit is detected automatically and the toll amount is charged according to the contractual conditions established by the Service Provider.
Self-service toll booths are available at all Autostrada del Brennero toll stations, allowing users to pay their toll independently, efficiently, and safely. The self-service cash machines accept cash payments, using banknotes between 5 and 100 euro and coins from 5 cents, as well as payments using prepaid cards, cards associated with bank accounts, debit and credit cards and electronic toll system.
The system automatically detects the payment method used, ensuring speed and accuracy in the transaction. Self-service toll booths are also equipped with a multilingual interface, which allows the user to select, through a special command, the desired language between Italian, German, English and French, thus ensuring easy use even for international customers.
Self-service toll machines are highly efficient in processing payments; however, occasional technical problems or malfunctions may sometimes occur. To ensure timely support for users in such circumstances, all self-service machines are equipped with a telematic communication system that allows you to connect with an operator in just a few moments. Autostrada del Brennero put in place specific operational procedures to ensure the proper completion of the transaction and to provide assistance to users. In every case, specific forms are to be filled out, tailored to the type of issue encountered. In particular, if change is not dispensed, either partially or fully, the system issues a “Credit Receipt,” a document representing a bearer credit instrument.
This receipt is redeemable at one of the authorised Service Centres along the A22 network, located at the following stations: Bressanone (BZ), Bolzano Sud, Trento Nord (Z.I. via Innsbruck 19), Affi (VR), Mantova Nord and Carpi (MO).
For more information on how the self-service toll machines work or how to handle any issues, please contact Autostrada del Brennero at the following email address: [email protected]
Motorway tolls can be paid using a debit card (Bancomat) via the Fast Pay service. This system allows payment without entering a PIN, in a simple and fast way, with no additional cost to the user. The enabled Bancomat card can be used at all Autostrada del Brennero toll booths and on most of the Italian motorway network.
To use the service, at the toll booth, simply access the automatic doors marked with the payment card symbol: after inserting the ticket collected at the entrance, you must insert the Bancomat card into the appropriate reader with the magnetic stripe facing down to the right, or by holding it close to the contactless reader.
This service is available at all toll lanes with an attendant. You can either give the card along with your ticket, or, once the amount to be paid is displayed, hold it against the contactless reader. Cards that function as both credit and debit are accepted in credit mode. To receive an invoice, you must request a receipt at the time of payment and then send it to the motorway company where the toll was paid, filling out the appropriate form.In case of problems or for further verification, the user should contact their credit institution.

The Current Account Card is a magnetic card that allows deferred payment of motorway tolls. It is linked to a bank account and has neither an expiry date nor a spending limit. This payment method is particularly suitable for companies, professionals, and in general for anyone who needs to invoice toll amounts. The card can be requested at authorised banks by presenting the required documentation. For contracts activated with a security deposit at Autostrada del Brennero (it is no longer possible to open new contracts, only to supplement existing ones), additional cards can be requested by paying a security deposit or, alternatively, by providing a bank guarantee. An annual membership fee applies to the first card on the contract, with an additional charge for each supplementary card.
The current account card is accepted on the entire Italian motorway network. At the toll booth exit, insert the card after the ticket into the reader in the automatic lanes displaying the card payment logo. It is also accepted in lanes for cash payments: in this case, the card should be handed to the toll collector along with the ticket.
The card has no spending limit but cannot be used to validate the passage of other vehicles in line or following behind. Toll charges are billed monthly to the bank account. It is recommended to avoid exposing the card to magnetic sources, as these may cause the loss of the data stored on the magnetic stripes. Should a malfunction occur, you may reach out to the Service Centres for technical assistance.
From 1 November 2024, prepaid toll cards can no longer be purchased, but those already issued can be used regularly until the credit is exhausted. Once the available balance has been used, the card will be retained at the toll booth. The prepaid card is accepted on the entire Italian motorway network. At the toll booth, in the automatic lanes marked with the card logo, insert it after the ticket.
The display will first show the toll amount and, after the card is inserted and correctly read, it will show the available credit and the remaining balance, updated after the deduction. If the credit is not enough, it is possible to complete the payment with a second card (maximum two per transaction) or, on the multifunctional lanes manned by an operator, pay the difference in cash: other forms of integration such as current account cards, bank cards or electronic toll devices are not accepted.
As it is equivalent to cash, the card can also be used for multiple consecutive payments in the same lane.It is recommended to avoid exposing the card to magnetic sources, as these may cause the loss of the data stored on the magnetic stripes. In the event of a malfunction, users may request a refund of their remaining credit by filling in the FORM on the Autostrade per l'Italia website.
