Intermodality

Autostrada del Brennero is the only Italian motorway concessionaire that has also been involved in rail freight transport for many years. Through STR – Brennero Trasporto Rotaia and STR2, it controls InRail and RTC – Rail Traction Company, which, together with the associated company Lokomotion, operate almost 30,000 trains a year thanks to the work of over 800 employees. This means that every day, around 1,500 heavy goods vehicles are transferred from road to rail, helping to reduce CO₂ emissions by around 300,000 tonnes each  year along the Brenner corridor.

Intermodal hubs

Merging different transport networks and logistics systems is one of the main challenges for future mobility. With this in mind, Autostrada del Brennero is promoting the development of intermodal infrastructure capable of efficiently linking road, rail and waterways.

In addition to upgrading the Trento interport, the company is working on the construction of a new intermodal hub at Isola della Scala, in collaboration with Verona’s Quadrante Europa, one of Europe’s leading logistics hubs. The aim is to encourage the shift of freight from road to rail, thereby reducing heavy goods traffic, emissions and environmental impact along the Brenner corridor.

Isola della Scala’s location is particularly strategic: situated along the transport routes linking northern and southern Europe and the East and West, this makes it a logistics hub of great international importance.

Alongside the development of road-rail intermodality, Autostrada del Brennero is also focusing on waterway transport. Among the company’s projects is the expansion of the port of Valdaro, an infrastructure that connects Mantua to the sea via approximately 136 kilometres of canals navigable throughout the year thanks to the absence of significant fluctuations in water levels.

The aim is to create, in the future, a trimodal hub capable of integrating road, rail and waterway transport, thereby improving logistical efficiency and promoting an increasingly sustainable and integrated transport system.
