Especially during the winter period, characterised by freezing temperatures and snowfall, the A22 implements a joint operational protocol with the Road Police, the Fire Service, emergency medical services and Civil Protection, which sets out the procedures for coordination and response between the various operational units. The CAU acts as the management and coordination centre for accidents on the motorway, ensuring the prompt mobilisation of the relevant authorities.
Thanks to continuous monitoring of weather and road conditions – including via sensors embedded in the road surface and forecasting systems – it is possible to anticipate phenomena such as the formation of ice and the onset of snowfall, thereby planning snow-clearing operations in advance. This approach also allows for the optimised use of de-icing agents, thereby reducing their environmental impact and helping to protect infrastructure and the local environment.
