Infrastructure

The A22 is one of the main transport routes between the Po Valley and Central Europe. The motorway forms part of the A1 motorway network and extends to the national border, connecting Modena to the Brenner Pass and continuing on into Austria andGermany. The motorway is 314 kilometres long and crosses through four Italian regions: Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy, Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige/South Tyrol, playing a strategic role in the movement of people and goods along the north-south European corridor.

Viaducts, bridges, overpasses

A bridge represents the physical continuation of a road when it separates from the ground in order to overcome obstacles, whether natural or man-made. The extreme variety of conditions imposed by the surrounding environment gives rise to a wide range of bridge types and forms. As engineering works, bridges necessarily involve a transformation of the natural environment to adapt it to human needs.

These structures therefore become integrated into the geographical environment and form part of the landscape itself. The new landscape incorporating the structure differs from the original one and inevitably creates a different visual impact on the observer, who cannot fail to perceive its presence. For these reasons, when designing and carrying out the reconstruction and renewal works of motorway overpasses, A22 aims to create structures capable of giving each individual area distinctive architectural features. These works are designed not only to enhance the visual quality of the surrounding landscape, but also to minimise environmental impact as much as possible. Modern and efficient structures are therefore designed and built, while at the same time receiving careful attention from an aesthetic point of view. These high-quality engineering works are intended to represent a strong urban and landscape landmark for the surrounding area, without compromising structural integrity or functional requirements.

Maintenance and reconstruction works on these engineering structures are also aimed at upgrading their performance from a structural perspective, increasing their load-bearing capacity in accordance with the limits established by current regulations, including seismic requirements, as well as improving their geometric and functional characteristics in line with present-day traffic needs and applicable standards.

There are 146 overpasses crossing the motorway. Most of them have already been upgraded and have been designed and built to enhance the architectural identity of the areas in which they are located, while minimising their impact on the environment.
